For tourists, Las Vegas corners the market on excitement, bright lights and games of chance. But area planners wanted to make this a region where residents can live, work and play as well. On the edge of the city limits sits the resort community of Summerlin, regarded as one of the best places to live in the United States. It promotes a beautiful, thriving way of life while offering residents desired necessities and luxuries located in the sprawling Downtown Summerlin complex. Situated in the heart of this residential community, it offers a multitude of dining, shopping and leisure options.
The design challenge was creating a space that could create visual cohesion while meeting the branding needs of each retail location. When the Howard Hughes Corporation presented Stir Architecture (then Altoon Partners) with the task to design this entertainment hub, they looked to the surrounding Nevada desert to guide their inspiration and metal composite material to tie it all together. The result was an outdoor mall spanning over 100 acres, with 1.6 million square feet of retail space and 200,000 square feet of business space. Palm trees, green bushes, stone paths, and water installations complement a host of popular stores, a movie theater, and both fine and casual dining, primarily supported by ALPOLIC MCM in finishes that speak to the natural environment while highlighting the complex’s many upscale businesses.
More than 211,000 square feet of ALPOLIC Solid Color, Mica, and Metallic finishes, fabricated by LCG Facades feature throughout the expanse of shops and eateries. The lighter hues of Mist White and other custom colors lining the upper and lower walkways connect the smaller boutiques and allow their signage to pop and attract passersby. Paired with darker finishes used for select large retailers and restaurant envelopes, the overall usage of ALPOLIC unites all of Downtown Summerlin’s tenants under a common theme - offering a fresh, lively atmosphere residents will want to visit regularly.
