Surpassing the lodge-style home designs synonymous with the Pacific Northwest is a new wave of bespoke single-family residences capturing the awe and envy of architecture lovers. A collaboration between two innovative firms, Ponderosa Bend defines dream home aesthetic, harmonizing modern European sensibilities with Oregon’s rugged landscape. Included in the design, surrounding the courtyard roof, are elegant ALPOLIC materials.

Ponderosa Bend, located in Bend, Oregon’s upscale Tetherow neighborhood, was developed by Malaspina Design in partnership with Spanish architectural firm FRPO Rodriguez & Oriol. It is also home to Malaspina’s director, Gerardo Pandel. From the beginning, Pandel had a vision for his house.

To contrast with the home’s concrete floor, Pandel said, “We wanted this massive roof to be covered by something metallic.” Familiar with metal composite materials from his previous work on canopies in Mexico, he explored the possibilities of using MCM for his personal residence.

In considering the site for Ponderosa Bend, called M1 during the construction phase, the architectural team incorporated the large Ponderosa pine on the property into the home’s design. The tree became part of the inner courtyard as the polygon-shaped home was built around it.

During the process, the demand for custom homes in the region inspired FRPO and Malaspina to collaborate on an additional residential project. After showing his plans to local design build professionals, he felt confident in his venture. “They were like, you should do another one. So I bought the lot next to me.” Drawing from his real estate and development background, Pandel used profits from the sale of the adjacent M2, called Porous House, to fund future projects in the area. “I think the projects we’re doing are really cool,” said Pandel. “People love the houses.”
