Custom ALPOLIC MCM Beautifies Landmark Alaskan Hospital
A visit to the doctor or dentist can trigger anxieties, especially for children. In this branch of healthcare, it’s important to create a soothing environment so young patients feel safe and confident to return for checkups.
In Alaska, one facility took the initiative to not only create comfortable spaces but also a welcoming exterior that speaks to the surrounding landscape.

Serving the health and wellness needs of native Alaskan and American Indian residents since 1982, Southcentral Foundation is one of the state’s largest non-profit organizations. SCF stands at the forefront of quality healthcare for Anchorage, the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, and surrounding villages. Their completion of the Alaska Native Health Southcentral Children’s Clinic K’kuyaqa Niłtu in 1997, replacing an outdated facility operating since the 1950s, allowed SCF to further expand their health options to better serve the community.

This five-story facility accommodates services for children’s dental care, behavioral health, pediatric neurology, and obstetrics and gynecology. Designed by Alaskan firm Kumin Associates, Inc., the clinic features an envelope comprised of over 40,000 square feet of ALPOLIC metal composite materials.
Washington state-based Northclad fabricated and installed the three custom shades of brown in a design nodding to the nearby Chugach Mountain Range. Deep and medium brown peaks and valleys pop against a lighter golden finish background on every side of the envelope. Additional MCM panels in the same colors clad the stair towers and fascia. The overall appearance of the facility projects imagery defining strength and constancy, in soothing colors meant to comfort young patients experiencing anxieties about visiting the doctor.
