Established in 1911, the University of Western Australia is seeped in a century’s worth of academic tradition. As UWA is Western Australia’s oldest university, any design or construction must complement the existing architecture on campus.
Architectural firm, Woods Bagot, was commissioned to design the university’s new Business School. Its purpose was to merge several of the university’s business facilities into one central location. Now while the architects adhered to the requirements of a tertiary educational facility, they also created a modern and structurally innovative design.
The building utilizes nearly 54,000 square feet of ALPOLIC aluminum composite material. The zinc, silver, and grey metallic panels are featured throughout the building’s exterior. Each of the windows is framed with ALPOLIC aluminum composite panels. In addition, numerous panels were perforated and large geometric shapes were cut out to allow natural light to penetrate an otherwise opaque exterior. The perforation resembles shadowing, complementing the obscurely shaped circular cuts.
The new state-of-the-art facility utilizes the latest technological advances to create a 21st century prototype for tertiary educational facilities.
